Finished

It's finally complete!
Began: August 24, 2008
Completed: June 12, 2010

Red Schoendienst

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. A few tiny little black specks on the front of the card appear to be part of the printing process.

Comments: That's all folks, 33 of 33 cards.

Enos Slaughter

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. One of the best cards in the set.

Comments: A very nice-looking card. He looks kinda young in the photo, even though he was a 13-year veteran in 1954.

Warren Spahn

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Fair. Lots of scuffing with some water damage.

Comments: Hey, it's Warren Spahn.

Ferris Fain

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. If you look real close, there are a few pinholes – too bad.

Comments: I probably paid too much but I only have a few more cards to go.

Nelson Fox

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. A nice-looking card with a few rounded corners, especially the bottom-left.

Comments: The back of the card says his nickname "Nellie" is not meant to be feminine. That's an odd thing to have on the back of one's card.

Richie Ashburn

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. A very bright, nice-looking card of the Phillies Hall-of-Famer.

Comments: Not sure, but I think this may be the only card I have of Richie Ashburn.

Ted Kluszewski

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good. Creases and rounded corners along with an off-centered back.

Comments: You can't beat 'Big Klu."

Gil McDougald

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good. Rounded corners with an off-centered back. Too bad.

Comments: The Yankees third baseman was the 1951 AL rookie of the year.

Al Rosen

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Fair at best. All for corners are rounded with some fraying.

Comments: Rosen was the 1953 American League MVP.

Billy Cox

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good to excellent. There's not a whole lot wrong with this card but slightly rounded corners.

Comments: On the back of the card: He tied the major league record on May 21, 1952 by making three appearances at bat in one inning.

Saturday, December 26, 2009

Minnie Minoso

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good at best. This card is off-center.

Comments: The Cuban-born Minoso was a seven-time All-Star and a three-time gold glove winner.

Sherman Lollar

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. No real big flaws, a really nice card.

Comments: I actually got this card months ago but was too lazy to post. His real first name is John.

Hank Sauer

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. Fairly sharp corners and no creases. So far this is the best-conditioned card I have in the set.

Comments: First of four cards I got a few days ago. Sauer was NL MVP in 1952.

Gus Zernial

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good to excellent. Both bottom edges have wear but no real creases on the card.

Comments: Second of four cards I got a few days ago. In 1951, Zernial led the AL in homers (33) and RBI (129).

Sammy White

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. It's a bit off center, but not by a whole lot.

Comments: Third of four cards I got a few days ago. Is it just me or does he have some white teeth?

Roy McMillan

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Excellent. No creases whatsoever but the card seems to have a very slight bubble in the top left corner. It's hardly noticeable.

Comments: Last of four cards I got a few days ago. A real nice card of the Cincinnati infielder.

Stan Musial

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Poor to fair. Plenty of creases, rounded corners and pencil marks on Musial's face (near his nose).

Comments: I thought this would be the costliest card of the set but I was lucky enough to score this one for $xx. I was pretty excited to see a package in the mail today.

Carl Erskine

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Poor to fair. Lots of creases, rounded corners and some sort of ink on the back.

Comments: Erskine was a 20-game winner for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1953.

George Kell

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. Nice overall condition with rounded corners and one very light creases.

Comments: That old Red Sox hat is much better than the one they wear today.

Billy Martin

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good to excellent. A few soft corners, especially the bottom left.

Comments: This is quickly becoming one of my favorite cards in my collection. It's great to see a young Billy Martin in a Yankees uniform.

Ralph Kiner

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good to excellent. Corners are a bit soft but no real creases on the card.

Comments: Hit 35 homer with 116 RBI in first season with the 1953 Cubs.

Jim Gilliam

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good to very good. There is a pretty good crease in the top right corner but other than that it's in pretty good shape.

Comments: When Jackie Robinson moved to third base and the outfield in 1953, it was Jim Gilliam who replaced him. He played so well, he was named NL Rookie of the Year.

Frankie Baumholtz

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good. Has a pretty rough top edge and a few light creases.

Comments: Reading the back of the card, Baumholtz was also a professional basketball player.

Dee Fondy

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good. It looks like this card may have some water damage. The front looks pretty good but the back has some slight staining.

Comments: Fondy had a good year with the Cubs in 1953 hitting .309 with 18 homers and 78 RBI.

Eddie Yost

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Good. It's got a few creases but still a nice card.

Comments: I really think those zipper-front uniforms of the 1950s were cool!

Bob Lemon

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. I'm not sure on this one, the card could be excellent but for the pinhole in the top right corner.

Comments: According to the card's back: Lemon led the league in wins in 1950 with 23; in 1951 he led the league with 14 losses.

Duke Snider

Where purchased: eBay

Condition: Very good. It has a crease in the top-quarter of the card that goes through the bat horizontally. However, it does not go through the card.

Comments: Again another attractive card, I am constantly surprised by the quality of this small set of 1954.
